  7. I.  Introduction
  8.     ------------
  9. Welcome to the ISLSCP Initiative I CD Collection.  This document describes in
  10. detail the contents of the five CDs in this set.  Contained here is a detailed
  11. overview of the layout for the data, documentation, and software on these CDs;
  12. the file naming conventions; and the list of documentation and software found
  13. on this CD set.  For a description of the scientific basis and rationale for
  14. this data set collection, read the article "An Overview of the ISLSCP
  15. Initiative I Global Data Sets" found in OVERVIEW.DOC on Volume 1 of this CD
  16. set.

  20. II.  ISLSCP Initiative I Data Set Groups
  21.      ------------------------------------
  22.  
  23. The data sets on this CD set are organized into the five groups listed below.
  24. The data sets span the 24 month period, 1987╨1988, and all but one (river flow
  25. rates) are mapped to a common spatial resolution and grid (1 deg. x 1 deg.).
  26. Temporal resolution for most data sets is monthly; however, a few are at a
  27. finer resolution (e.g., 6-hourly).  The five groups are as follows:
  28.  
  29.      1. Vegetation
  30.      2. Hydrology and Soils
  31.      3. Snow, Ice, and Oceans
  32.      4. Radiation and Clouds
  33.      5. Near-Surface Meteorology
  34.  
  35. The data within each of these areas were acquired from a variety of sources
  36. including model output, satellites, and ground measurements. The individual
  37. data sets were provided in a variety of forms. In some cases, this required
  38. the data publication team to regrid and reformat data sets and in others to
  39. produce monthly averages from finer resolution data. The specific handling for
  40. each data set is detailed in the documentation. The regridded, reformatted,
  41. integrated, and peer reviewed data sets are published on this five-volume CD
  42. collection.

  44. The vegetation; hydrology and soils; snow, ice, and oceans; and radiation and
  45. clouds data are all found on Volume 1 of the set, while the near-surface
  46. meteorology data span Volumes 2╨5. For a summary description of the data sets
  47. in this collection, see the overview article (OVERVIEW.DOC) on Volume 1. In
  48. addition to the data, Volume 1 contains the data set documentation, a file
  49. describing what is on each of the CDs in this set (AAREADME.CDS), the peer
  50. review of these data (PEER_REV.DOC), fully formatted documentation files (file
  51. name .PDF), and software to decompress the compressed data files, to read the
  52. PDF files, and to run Macintosh CD drives. Volumes 2-5 also have the data set
  53. documentation, and the decompression software and CD drivers.

  422. below.  The parameters are arranged by data group as listed in Section I above
  423. and as described in the overview article for these CDs (OVERVIEW.DOC).  The
  424. parameters are NOT listed in the order that they would appear when viewing the
  425. filenames or directories from the CDs (i.e., they are not in the order shown
  426. in Section III above).  The listing below also gives the data set document
  427. that fully describes the parameter and the parameter's temporal resolution on
  428. these CDs.

  985. VI.  Software
  986.      --------
  987.  
  988. The SOFTWARE directory on each CD contains the decompression software required
  989. for the data in the MTH_3HR directory on Volume 1 of this set and for ALL of
  990. the data on the other four volumes (Volumes 2-5).  This decompression software
  991. uses the UNIX compression algorithm. This algorithm is a modified Lempel-Ziv
  992. algorithm which is described in "A Technique for High Performance Data
  993. Compression," Terry A. Welch, IEEE Computer, vol. 17, no. 6 (June 1984), pp.
  994. 8-19 (see appropriate data documents for additional information).  
  995.  
  996. It is provided for a wide variety of platforms including IBM PC compatibles
  997. running MS-DOS, Apple Macintoshes, and DEC VAXes running VMS. GZIP software is
  998. also provided for computers running the UNIX operating system, since on some
  999. UNIX platforms the driver/operating system software automatically converts ALL
  1000. CAP filenames to ALL LOWERCASE.  GZIP will allow you to specify the case of
  1001. the ".Z", a feature which is not available in the decompression software
  1002. provided with the UNIX operating system and may be necessary to decompress
  1003. these data.  An IBM 386 and compatibles, or a Mac II and later machine is
  1004. recommended for improved performance when using these two platforms.  No
  1005. special hardware is required to use this decompression software.
  1006.  
  1007. This software has been compiled from several public-access, FTP anonymous
  1008. sites on the Internet. Updates to this software are available periodically
  1009. from those sites. A full list of these sites is given in the AAREADME.CMP file
  1010. in the SOFTWARE directory on CD Volume 1. For convenience, some of those sites
  1011. are listed here.

  1017. Under the SOFTWARE directory we have also provided updated versions of the ISO
  1018. 9660 CD driver software for the Macintosh.  This software requires Mac System
  1019. 7.0 or higher and should be installed in the extensions folder within your
  1020. system folder.  This version of the driver software corrects a limitation in a
  1021. previous version of this software.  When this software is installed and
  1022. working you will NOT see ";1" extensions appended to the end of your file
  1023. names.  This extension complicates the decompression of compressed files
  1024. because the decompression software requires a ".Z" as the extension.  It does
  1025. not recognize the file as compressed with an extension of ".Z;1".
  1026.  
  1027. This and all other Macintosh software has been binhexed using BenHex 4.0.
  1028. These files must be un-benhexed before they can be used.  If you do not have
  1029. BenHex 4.0 it can be obtained over the Internet from the following FTP site:

  1033. The ACROBAT directory also contains software to view fully formatted (fonts,
  1034. color, layout) versions of documents prepared in an Acrobat compatible format
  1035. (Acrobat files have ".PDF" as an extension).  For your convenience, we have
  1036. prepared the overview, peer review and brochure, and this document in this
  1037. format and have placed them with the Acrobat software.
  1038.  
  1039. These documents are also available in the standard ASCII format used for all
  1040. of the documents on these CDs. This "reader" software is available free of
  1041. charge from Adobe Systems for PCs, Macintoshes and Sun UNIX platforms.
  1042. Readers for HP UNIX platforms are under construction.  We have provided these
  1043. three sets of software for your use.  This software is updated periodically
  1044. by Adobe Systems and can be obtained from their World Wide Web home page under
